Assignment Seven - Campus Feature News

On a Happier Note

With colleges returning to campus amid a pandemic, everything looks a little bit different. Classes are moved online, for some of us all of them, and once heavy populated areas are a no mans land. Masks are worn around campus, hiding our smiles and excitement to be back, and it seems that the only thing we are hearing is who's sick and how many people are in quarantine. All of this information is hard news, but for the purpose of this blog post, were going to turn it around.

The University of Texas is a large school, with a large campus, in the heart of a large city. Obviously crime, corona, and whats latest in the government will reign supreme on their local news outlets, but lets talk about feature news! Feature news is the lighthearted side of things, the amusing or life revealing stories. In a time where it seems like negativity is bitting us from all sides, a little feature news may be just the thing to turn it around.

One thing I notices about the atmosphere at the university of Texas is how much they support each other at students, athletes, and people. A recent article shows how "a UT undergrad helped build the app that will assist students coming back to school this fall." While his own plans were turned upside down this past summer break, due to the coronavirus, Henry Rossiter worked with fellow engineering students and computer science gurus to create an app that aided in a safe return to campus. This app, known as Protect Texas Together, is somewhat of a COVID symptoms diary so students can get connected to medical assistance if need be and eventually be able to utilize the app for contact tracing. This story shines through as a positive spin on a usually rough subject, feature news that we have all been needing!

The University of Texas has always done a great job keeping the students up to date on the hard news that sweeps across campus and lingers in the city of Austin. However they do an even better job of posting the fun feature news, and they do it by supporting their student body!
