Assignment Six - Campus Crime

Do you feel safe?

As kids we dream of growing up, heading off to college and escaping the close grasp of our parents overbearing nature. However, our parents struggle with the idea of us growing up and going off to college. Often times, for parents, the hardest part of sending their child off to school is the thought of being far away if something happens. What if their car gets a flat tire, they have a little too much fun at a party, or something even worse? Well, campuses work extremely hard to ensure the safety of their students, but some excel even more than others. Brigham Young University - Idaho has reigned supreme as one of the safest college campuses in the country, but how do they do it?

Year after year, Brigham Young is ranked one of the top safest college campuses in America. Located in Rexburg Idaho, BYUI began its story in 1888. Starting as a small elementary school, the institution has now flourished into a large 30,000 student university that prides itself in keeping a safe campus. Even the city itself, Rexburg, only "boasts 0.17 violent crimes per 10,000 people." In order for the college to keep safe within its walls, the city must do their part as well. BYUI takes many measures when it comes to keeping their campus safe. One way Brigham Young stays on top of their crime rate is to employ an above average number of officers to patrol the school. This allows for quicker response time when incidents do occur and allots for more surveillance of campus. Another thing BYUI takes pride in is that they report a high percentage of their incidents, they like to leave no stone unturned. Not only does the campus and police force work diligently to keep the student body safe, the students also do their part by reporting an incident when it is seen. This sort of camaraderie is necessary to hold the safety status that they do.

When parents drop their kids off at college, they want to be one hundred percent certain that they will be safe day and night on campus. Colleges like Brigham Young University Idaho work very hard to ensure this safety for their student body. Whether is is the number of officers on campus or the fact that everyone works together to report crimes when they happen, BYUI earned the title of one of the safest college campuses in America. There is no doubt that you will feel safe stepping foot on this campus, and the proof is in the title.
